Brief History of SPECTRUM Therapy
- In 1989, SPECTRUM Therapy began as a small, two person operation. Physical therapists Thomas Boeke and Laura Coleman started an outpatient practice in Charlottesville, VA and operated under the name Sports Rehabilitation. They specialized in sports and orthopedic physical therapy. At about the same time, another physical therapist in town, Christine Dean, started a different small clinic, called Healthcare Physical Therapy.
- In 1991, Tom and Laura opened another clinic, Greene Physical Therapy, in Ruckersville, VA. Darcy Higgins, also a physical therapist, became a minority owner and began operating that facility when it opened. Chris opened another clinic in Fluvanna County, VA in 1992.
- In 1995, all of these clinics joined together and the name changed to SPECTRUM Therapy to reflect the variety of services and multiple locations. A Home Health Division was also created that year, under contract with Continuum Home Health Care (University of Virginia Health System), providing care in 9 counties in Virginia.
- From 1995 through 1998, the clinics grew in both volume and space, while the Home Health Division grew in volume and geographic coverage. The staff grew as well, creating the need for a Management Services Division (MSD to perform centralized insurance/patient billing services, accounting and payroll services, benefits and employee management, contract administration, information systems management and general administrative services for the Network. The practice continued to diversify its services by adding Athletic Training contracts with local High Schools, developing a Women's Health, Hand Therapy and Workplace Health specialty programs.
- In 1998, SPECTRUM Therapy opened two new clinics. One inside a 65,000 sq ft premiere health club in Charlottesville, and the other in Nelson County, VA. This brought the total outpatient clinics to 6. The Fluvanna and Nelson clinics also began their Fitness facilities where they provide medically supervised fitness to community residents.
- From 1999 - 2001, SPECTRUM formally initiated its Community Wellness services through lectures, injury screenings, Falls Prevention screenings, and "Aging With Grace" - a community educational event. Diversification also continued with developing an Adult Rehabilitation Services program for the outpatient neurologically impaired population.
- In 2000, SPECTRUM Therapy opened its 7th clinic in Harrisonburg, VA in an Assisted Living Facility. It also expanded its Home Health business into another Charlottesville Assisted Living Facility, as well as grew the service area to 15 counties.
- In 2001, SPECTRUM Therapy moved patient care and managment services to the downtown clinic and closed the Albemarle location. Distinctive Healthcare Services purchased SPECTRUM Therapy in August, 2001.
- In 2002, SPECTRUM Therapy moved into a new larger clinic location in Ruckersville and closed the Nelson location.
- In 2003, SPECTRUM Therapy added Workplace Health Services to its clinical service line.
- In 2004, SPECTRUM Therapy opened a new clinic in Waynesboro and discontinued providing services to Continuum Home Health Agency, while maintaining its home health contract with Interim Home Care. In June, Spectrum Therapy opened its new clinic location in Charlottesville along the 29N corridor.
